Pain that either starts in your lower back or buttocks and travels all along the leg is characteristic of sciatica. Along with pain, there could be tingling and burning sensations. Due to pain, there could be difficulty in sitting in one position for a long time.
Mild symptoms usually go away with time. But if the pain has been severe and long-standing, you should see a doctor.
Different causes of sciatica pain could be – Pinched nerve, disc herniation in the spine, tightness or spasm of the piriformis muscle, and certain tumours compressing the sciatic nerve.
Treatment involves : Medications like NSAIDs, and muscle relaxants to relieve the inflammation and spasms respectively.
Physical therapy : involves some stretching exercises and other exercises to strengthen back muscles.
Spinal injections : to decrease the swelling around the nerve.
