It is a device which delivers small amount of medication directly into the spinal fluid. When medicine is directly given in spinal fluid, very small amount is needed. Hence fewer side effects and better tolerance. It can effectively treat the cancer pain, nerve pain and spasticity associated in certain disease like Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke, Brain Injury.
Procedure is done in 2 steps- 1st trial dose is given to see the amount of relief patient gets and in 2nd step the pump is placed in the area (back or abdomen) as tolerated by patient comfortably.
The pump consists of a metal body which contains the medication, and it is connected to a catheter which delivers the medicine into the spinal fluid. The pump can be programmed to deliver the medicine at a given rate and when needed.
